Are You Ready to Adopt?
Your New Best Friend Awaits!
We’ve outlined everything you need to know before adopting your new best friend. Each animal at our shelter has their own story, and we want to make sure your next chapter together is filled with health, love, and friendship. We take special steps to make sure both you and your future pet are ready to find one another.
Before Visiting Us
If you’re interested in adopting a pet, please see all of our available pets here before visiting the shelter. We know that high levels of foot traffic and crowded adoption areas create stressful environments for our animals. Because of this we don’t allow the public to free roam the kennels. Our priority is to provide a calm and controlled environment where our animals are happy, healthy and stress-free. Also, a good majority of our animals are also being cared for by foster families out in our communities while they prepare for adoption so the pet you want to visit may not be at the adoption center.
Our Adoption Process
- View available animals online: Begin the process by viewing our Available Pets page and finding the animal(s) you are interested in adopting. If a pet is labeled “In a foster home”, please call our adoption center to schedule a meet and greet as these pets are not in our shelter.
- Visit us in person: Next visit our adoption center during regular adoption hours to meet our pets. Our team can answer questions and provide guidance to help match you with the perfect pet.
- Complete the adoption: Once you have found your perfect match, a Pawsitive Placement Team member will help you through the process of the adoption contract so you can bring home your new family member.
What Pets Receive
- A healthy pet examination from our Shelter Medicine Team, including a personalized medical assessment and treatment plan if needed.
- A behavior evaluation as well as enrichment and training while in our care.
- All age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming.
- Our dogs and puppies receive regular flea, tick, and heartworm protection while in our care, and our cats and kittens receive regular flea and tick preventative.
- A microchip to help ensure a safe return if your pet ever gets lost.

Our website has real-time listings of available animals. If an animal is not listed on the website, it has either been made temporarily unavailable or adopted.
HSVB does not maintain a waiting list. Adoptions are completed in person on a first-come, first-served basis. Review our adoption process above for more detailed information.
We know that high levels of foot traffic and crowded adoption areas create stressful environments for our animals. Our priority is to provide a calm and controlled environment where our animals are happy, healthy and stress-free. A good majority of our animals are also being cared for by foster families out in our communities while they prepare for adoption. Research shows that when animals are cared for in foster homes, it’s less stressful for them. As foster parents get to know the animal and their characteristics, it is very helpful in matching them to the most suitable family when they’re ready for adoption. For more information about our animals in foster care view here.
There is always an adjustment period with a new pet, especially if you have other pets in the home. HSVB can help you manage the adjustment. Several handouts are available in the adoption take home bag to guide you through the adjustment phase.
In addition, we encourage you to schedule any follow-up appointments with your veterinarian.
If you have any questions, issues, or concerns about your pet once you get home, please contact us.
